Tackling anti-social behaviour is a priority for Wherry Housing Association
The majority of cases of anti-social behaviour are resolved efficiently through informal, non legal responses, such as warning letters, mediation, good neighbour agreements or tenancy support.
For the more serious and persistent cases, appropriate legal action can sometimes be the only way to stop anti-social behaviour in the community.
One Wherry tenant, living in Cobholm, Gt. Yarmouth, continually threatened, harassed and verbally abused residents of Beavans Court. The tenant was also involved in other illegal activities in the wider community.
The tenant refused help and support and the anti-social behaviour continued to an extent that caused four families to leave the area.
Wherry’s Neighbourhood team worked closely in partnership with a range of agencies in Gt. Yarmouth, including Suffolk Heritage Housing, the Police and local residents to tackle this serious case of anti-social behaviour.
Wherry began legal action to evict the tenant and successfully obtained an Anti-social Behaviour Injunction to protect local residents and witnesses from further incidents until the case could be heard at court.
During the court proceedings, the tenant vacated the property and handed in the keys.
Although the tenancy had ended Wherry asked the court to grant a further Injunction to ensure the tenant could not return to the area, nor continue to cause a nuisance, harass or threaten local residents or Wherry staff.
The Police have said that there has been a marked reduction in the number of “call outs” to the area and residents have told us that there has been a significant improvement in the quality of their lives.
