Old Ford Housing Association
Old Ford Housing Association is committed to tackling anti-social behaviour. But ensuring that it doesn’t happen in the first place is just as important, according to Housing Services Manager June Morton. And this is how Old Ford Housing Association is doing it:
- Making sure the properties we build or improve meet the crime prevention and security standards developed by the police. “This includes making sure our estates are well-lit and there aren’t too many run-throughs and alleyways” explains June. “We also install intercom systems and close off garden areas. It isn’t just about preventing crime – it’s about making people feel secure in and around their homes.”
- Strictly enforcing tenancy or leasehold agreements. This includes everything from ensuring that people don’t illegally sub-let their property to making sure they clean up after their dog. “If people let their dog foul they are breaking their tenancy agreement which states they must look after the communal areas” says June. “These agreements are there so that everyone can enjoy where they live and not feel intimidated or threatened by antisocial behaviour.”
- Working closely with a number of local partners, including the police, social services and local mental health team, to give vulnerable people the support they need to maintain their tenancy. As June points out: “We want people to stay in their own homes and live independent lives for as long as possible.”
- Making sure that young people have something to do in community centres and by running the area’s youth contract. We also have regular meetings with the Safer Neighbourhood Team to identify any issues across the estates.
